East Bay Winter League

The East Bay Winter League is the beginner-friendly option for mixed gender, league-style Ultimate during the winter season. The season usually starts in early December, and lasts until late February / early March. Because this league is extremely popular with experienced players, the level of play gravitates somewhere north of "Recreational" and usually feels "Intermediate." Players of all skill levels, from raw beginners to former national champions, are balanced out by the team draft to produce a fun playing experience for everyone.

Winter 2011-12 News

Registration opens Wednesday, November 9th. Last year, registrations sold out for both men and women, so sign up early if you want to play!

Registration Begins Nov 9th!

Announcing signups for East Bay Winter League 2011-2012! Signups will begin on Wednesday, November 9th at noon. This is a first come, first serve league and will fill up quickly for both men and women.

    Basic details of the league:
  • Who: You
  • When: Tuesdays and/or Thursdays, November 29 through February 23, 7-9pm OR 9-11pm
  • Where: Berkeley, CA (Gilman Turf Fields and San Pablo Grass Fields)
  • What: This is a co-ed, intermediate league that is beginner friendly.
  • Cost: $60 per player, which includes a limited edition commemorative disc, end of year party, and some support for some social events throughout the season.

Disc Design

The design of this season's disc is going to be player-sourced. The creator of the winning design will be comped, guaranteed a spot in the league, and appreciated (if not worshipped) by all. Dave Allen is coordinating the contest and designs, so email him at lists (at) fullflavedave (dot) com by Friday Nov 18th if you are interested.

Captains

We still have room for a few captains. Being a captain means extra work and responsibility, but gives you a spot in the league, some control over your team composition (through the draft), a fabulous meal, and some other perks. If you're interested in being a captain this season, you'll receive plenty of guidance and be lavished with praise. Contact me at eastbaywinterleague (at) bayareadisc (dot) org for more info.

EBWL Policies

For those of you that have played East Bay Winter League in years past, some new policies were implemented last year to ensure that the league runs smoothly and to foster a great playing experience.

The Draft - Teams are drafted by the 14 captains year. This league will remain a "first-come, first-served league" which means the first 154 men (11 per team) and 98 women (7 per team) who sign up (252 players total) will get spots and they become the pool of players the captains can draft from. All 252 players will be drafted. Players on the waiting list move up only if someone drops out. We will continue processing the wait list after the season starts in case people drop out for any reason (injury, change of work schedule, etc.)

Payments Required BEFORE Draft - Because we need to have the pool of players solidified for the draft, your spot in the league is NOT confirmed until you pay your league fee. Please pay immediately upon registration to avoid being moved to the waitlist (if you're paying by check, please send an email to eastbaywinterleague (at) bayareadisc (dot) org and your spot will be reserved). Paypal is preferred, but checks should be made out to: Community Initiatives with “EBWL Fee” as the note and sent to Valerio Iani at 5527 Shattuck Ave, Apt 205, Oakland CA 94609

Players can only play in one winter league - Last year we had 70+ players on our wait list yet there was very poor attendance at EBWL by most of the players registered for both leagues. We want to a) spread the frisbee love and b) take measures to increase attendance at EBWL. If you were drafted in SFWL, you will not be drafted in EBWL in order to ensure equitable playing time for everyone hoping to play ultimate in the winter.

Remember...Sign up early. It's going to be a great season! For any other matters, please direct questions to eastbaywinterleague (at) bayareadisc (dot) org.
