The recommended attire and equipment for Ultimate is most similar to soccer: cleated shoes, comfortable cotton socks, loose-fitting shorts, and a t-shirt. Whether or not you play soccer, however, we have some Ultimate-specific recommendations for you.
Rubber-soled cleats designed specifically for field sports (e.g., soccer, baseball / softball, lacrosse, field hockey) will work best. Many Ultimate players also find turf shoes to be quite comfortable and effective. If you do not have cleats or turf shoes, then the next best alternative would be cross-trainers. We do not recommend flat running shoes or basketball high-tops (too slippery on the artificial turf), and we absolutely do not allow metal spikes (too dangerous / not permitted by ground rules at the facilities we've rented).
Please bring two t-shirts of your own to each day of camp: one that is white, and one that is dark-colored (not gray). In Ultimate, games at all levels are usually played as "lights vs. darks"; far less common is the usage of colored see-through vests as you might see in other field sports.
Although the sport is informally referred to as "ultimate frisbee," in Ultimate we play with a regulation 175g disc that meets specific standards. Along with your t-shirt, you will get a regulation Ultimate disc. You may leave your typical department store "frisbees" at home.
You will be outdoors for 5 or more hours each day. Sunglasses that fit snugly in a "wrap-around" style, or with ear loops, would work best. Sunblock is absolutely essential, as *** the amount of shade available varies by location ***. We will have some water coolers on site, but we also recommend that everyone brings his/her own water bottle pre-filled with water from home.
Unlike in soccer and some other field sports, it is fairly common to wear a baseball-style cap or visor while playing Ultimate. The choice to wear either one in Ultimate is a personal one, and we do not really have a recommendation one way or the other. If you have a favorite baseball cap or visor, bring it.
